Volleyball falls in home opener to Delaware Valley

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – In its home debut, the Ursinus College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Delaware Valley (3-3). Set scores were 25-22, 28-30, 31-29 and 25-21.

Ursinus took its biggest lead in the first set at 7-4 when senior Anahi McIntyre (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) scored her second kill of the set. From there, Delaware Valley would score six of the next seven points to take a 10-8 on an Ursinus attack error.

Ursinus stuck around, taking a 20-19 lead on a Delaware Valley handling error and then coming within one late at 23-22 on a kill by sophomore Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins Senior), before the Aggies scored the last two points of the set on attack errors.

Most of the action in the second set came in the last few points as both teams had potential set points, but, the other team would match the point.

Tied at 28-all, Ursinus got two straight kills from junior Gina Powers (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) to win the second set 30-28.

In the third set, the Bears fell behind as much as five before rallying to tie the score at 17-all on an attack error, then took a 20-18 lead. Like set two, the third set would come down to the final points as Ursinus led 28-27 before a service error, followed by an attack error gave the Aggies a 29-28 lead. Ursinus got a kill from McIntyre to tie the score at 29-all, before DVC scored the final two points.

The final set saw Delaware Valley lead all the way till a kill by Thiele made the score 21-all.

Thiele finished with a match-high 18 kills for Ursinus, with McIntyre going for 16 and Powers netting 15. Powers had 33 assists to go along with 14 digs, while junior libero Leah Masiello (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth's) had 22 digs to lead the Bears.

Ursinus opens Centennial Conference play on Saturday at Gettysburg, while also facing Hood.
