BALTIMORE, Md. – Johns Hopkins forwards Michelle Santangelo and Maggie Coulson combined for all five goals to lead the No. 4 Blue Jays past the Bears, 5-1.
Sophomore midfielder Angela Gervasi scored the lone goal for Ursinus (6-7-2, 2-6) in the 79th minute. Gervasi picked up her second career goal on a free kick from about 20 yards out. Her strike found the top of the net from the left side of the field.
The Bears were able to score on the stingy No. 4 Blue Jays (14-1, 8-0) despite taking two shots with both coming in the second half. Ursinus freshman Skylar Knapp was credited with the other shot for the Bears. Coming into the contest, Johns Hopkins had yielded just two goals to Centennial opponents in seven matches.
Johns Hopkins was on the offensive attack for a majority of the match, ripping an astounding 28 shots. Accounting for the offense, Santangelo picked up the hat trick and Coulson scored twice.
Getting the scoring started, Coulson blasted a ball into lower right corner of the net in the 13th minute off a corner kick by Toni Abate.
Less than ten minutes later, Santangelo received a cross from Mizuho Obayaski from the left side. Santangelo tapped in the goal to the back right post in the 22nd minute.
The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead to halftime.
A few minutes into the second half, Coulson scored her second goal as her volley went high into the net from the top of the box.
Santangelo picked up her second and third goals within five minutes of each other courtesy of two Coulson assists on crosses. In the 51st minute, Santangelo headed in a cross to the far post. In the 56th minute, Santangelo finished another cross. Santangelo's three-goal day elevated her to second in conference goal scoring.
CC saves leader Ursinus sophomore goalie Sabrina Doherty made 12 saves in a busy day in goal. Doherty made several great saves to keep the Bears in the match early on.
Ursinus sophomore goalie Sarah Embley came on for a few minutes of action, facing no shots.
Johns Hopkins keeper Robyn Lipschultz didn't face a shot in over 60 minutes of work. Hannah Lynn allowed a goal and made one save in under 30 minutes of relief.
The Blue Jays had seven corners and the Bears were held to no attempts.
The Bears host Washington College Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
