Gymnastics third at ECACs; Bears qualify for nationals as a team

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ursinus College women's gymnastics team qualified for the 2013 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship with a third place finish on Sunday afternoon at the 2013 ECAC Championships hosted by SUNY-Cortland.

The Bears finished with a total team score of 185.725, 1.500 ahead of Springfield. In addition to qualifying as a team, assistant coach John Dao was named as the Assistant Coach of the Year.

The Bears finished with a team-high score on the floor at 47.275, followed by a 46.825 on the vault, a 46.375 on the bars and a 45.250 on the beam.

Sophomore Kristin Aichele (Upper Black Eddy, Pa./Palisades) had the individual high score on the afternoon, as she tied for the high score on the balance beam with a 9.775. Junior Monica Durham (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) finished tied for third on the vault at 9.650, while senior Johanna Warren (Shakopee, Minn./Hopkins) was tied for third on the bars at 9.600. Senior Stephanie Schmidt (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) was fourth on the beam at 9.650. Aichele also posted a fifth-place finish on the vault at 9.625. Durham was sixth on the all-around at 36.600.

All-ECAC honors are awarded to those who finish in the top six.

Rounding out the team scores, starting with the vault saw freshman Kristina Steffenhagen (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) with a 9.225, Schmidt with a 9.200 and sophomore Riley Acton (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) with a 9.125.

On the bars, Schnebel had a 9.300, Durham had a 9.250, Acton had a 9.200 and sophomore Jamie Hammell (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had a 9.025.

On the beam, Steffenhagen had a 9.000, Durham had an 8.500, junior Megan Bolash (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) had an 8.325.

On the floor, Karina Marks had a 9.600, Steffenhagen had a 9.500, sophomore Adelaide Hurlbert (Inman, S.C./Spartanburg Day School) had a 9.400 and Durham had a 9.200.
