Volleyball falls to McDaniel, Sweeps Penn State-Brandywine to Earn Friday Split

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team split their pair of games on Friday night. After falling 3-1 in their Centennial Conference opener to McDaniel, the Bears bounced back to sweep Penn State Brandywine.

McDaniel 3, Ursinus 1

The Bears got off to a slow start against the Green Terror, falling 25 -12 in the opening set. Ursinus went down in the second as well as McDaniel jumped out to an 8-2 lead, however, the Bears stormed back. Down 16-10, the Bears rallied off five straight points and then a kill from Kelly Piotrowicz tied the set at 20 apiece late. An ace by Lauren Novotny gave the Bears the lead and they never looked back. Leading 24-21, Rachael Girard fired a kill to give the Bears their first set over the Green Terror since 2014.

The third set proved to be back-and-forth throughout with neither team able to gain much control. The two teams traded five ties until an 8-3 run gave the Green Terror the third set 25-15 to take a 2-1 lead. McDaniel went up 16-9 in the fourth as well, but the Bears climbed back within four at 16-12 as they railed off a trio of points. Another 8-4 run down the stretch for the Green Terror clinched the set 35-17 and the match, 3-1.

Ursinus 3, Penn State-Brandywine 0

The Bears bounced back after their loss in the first game to jump out to an early 14-3 lead over Penn State-Brandywine. Isabelle Deal, Olivia DeBonte, Miranda Foster, and Piotrowicz each contributed to the early offensive surge. Leading 24-7, a Piotrowicz kill ended a dominant 25-7 set by the Bears.

The second set was much closer with neither team able to pull away. Finally, tied at 11, the Bears took control with a 7-2 run with the help of kills from Katie Cressman and Paige DeAlba. An ace by Lauren Novotny ended the set 25-19. Much like the first, the Bears dominated the third. Two kills from DeAlba helped the Bears take an early 10-2 lead. Ursinus took the final five points, ending with an ace from Ashley Kelly to complete the sweep and finish the day with a win.

DeAlba led the Bears in the win with eight kills while Piotrowicz tallied an impressive three aces.
