Volleyball Concludes Season at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team put a scare into host Muhlenberg in the first set of Wednesday's Centennial Conference match, but the Mules held on to take the opening salvo, 25-23, and cruised from there to a 3-0 sweep in the Bears' last match of the season.

Junior Allison Raff finished with eight kills and ten digs and freshman Kelly Piotrowicz collected nine digs and nine assists for Ursinus (8-14, 1-9), which nearly stole the first set from a Muhlenberg squad firmly in third place in the CC standings. The opening frame featured seven lead changes and a whopping 13 ties, the last of them at 23-all after a four-point Bear run that included two kills by senior Sam Murphy, one from Piotrowicz, and another from sophomore Taylor McCartney. But a kill by Shannon Hubert gave the Mules (18-9, 7-3) the upper hand again, and an attack error by Ursinus handed the home side a 25-23 decision.

Muhlenberg was never threatened in the final two sets, winning them by respective counts of 25-9 and 25-16.

Maggie Enestvedt led the Mules with ten kills, and Shannon Hubert racked up 27 assists, seven kills, and five digs. Allison Glass (14), Elizabeth Garrison (11), and Kelly Tornetta (11) all reached double-digits in digs for Muhlenberg, which hit .284 and dominated at the net with its players combining for 20 block assists.

Senior Emily van Mulbregt paced the Bears with 12 assists and added two kills and two digs in her final collegiate match, with Murphy chipping in three kills and a block. Fellow senior Danielle Kenny had a kill and a block. McCartney pitched in with four kills, four digs, and an ace, and sophomore Sydney Gonzalez had eight digs, three assists, and two aces.

Raff finished the season with a career highs in kills (276) and kills per set (3.58). She is tied for third in the CC in kills per set, a number that stands as the best for a Bear since Jill Alspach in 2007.
