Volleyball Nets Another Road Victory

ABINGTON, Pa. – Kelly Piotrowicz and Allison Raff continued their run of double-doubles and got plenty of help from their friends as the Ursinus College volleyball team grabbed a 3-1 victory at Penn State-Abington on Thursday night. With their fourth road victory of the year, the Bears surpassed last season's win total.

Raff went off for a match-high 14 kills and supplemented them with 22 digs while Piotrowicz posted 16 digs and 13 assists in addition to six kills for Ursinus (6-4), which held the Nittany Lions to an .014 hitting percentage in a 25-18, 18-25, 25-16, 25-23 final. Piotrowicz also served four of the Bears' dozen aces and joined Raff with a third consecutive double-double effort.

Abington (9-4) surged to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but sophomore Sydney Gonzalez recorded three of her match-best five aces during an eight-point service run that culminated in an 11-5 advantage for the visitors. The Nittany Lions never got closer than five the rest of the frame, and senior Sam Murphy's kill capped a 25-18 first set.

After Abington reversed the score in the second set, the Bears pulled away midway through a third set that featured five ties and three lead changes. Back-to-back kills by freshman Miranda Foster and Raff put Ursinus ahead to stay at 12-10, and two more aces off the serve of Gonzalez stretched the margin to 16-11 before the Bears ran away with a 25-16 decision.

Ursinus led by as much as seven in the fourth set, only for the Nittany Lions to make things interesting with a 4-0 run that cut the spread to 23-22. But Raff sandwiched a pair of kills around her own attack error to ice the match.

Sam Amaro finished with 13 kills and 14 digs for Abington, and Maddi Richard complemented a match-high 32 digs with four aces.

Foster and junior Taylor McCartney had five kills apiece, and Foster added three blocks for the Bears, who improved to 4-1 on the road this season. Gonzalez racked up a season-high 17 digs and five assists in addition to her five aces; Gonzalez currently ranks second in the Centennial Conference in aces per set (0.68). Raff is second in the league in both kills (129) and kills per set (3.79).

Ursinus returns to CC play at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
