Volleyball Rolls at Marywood

Volleyball Rolls at Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – A dominating opening set gave the Ursinus College volleyball team plenty of momentum with which to sweep Marywood University, 3-0, on the road Wednesday night. Junior Allison Raff continued to power the Bears, who took the match by a score of 25-6, 25-21, 25-13.

After recording 19 kills and 16 digs just a night earlier at Rutgers-Camden, Raff added another double-double with a 14-kill, 13-dig performance against the Pacers (0-5), extending her strech of double-digit kills to four. Freshman setter Kelly Piotrowicz, fresh off a near-triple double against the Scarlet Raptors, served up 13 assists and chipped in 10 digs as the Ursinus attack finished with a.233 hitting percentage (30K-10E-86TA), the Bears' most efficient performance of the season.

Sophomore Sydney Gonzalez matched Raff for a team-high 13 digs and added an assist for Ursinus (4-2), which scripted its second sweep in as many nights and third of the year. Junior Taylor McCartney was one of four Bears to reach double figures in digs (11), and senior Emily van Mulbregt added seven digs, five assists, two kills, and two aces.

Freshman Miranda Foster finished with four kills and a team-best 2.5 blocks for the Bears, who had 6.0 rejections on the night.

The Bears had already roared to a commanding 8-3 lead in the first set before pulling away with a 15-0 run highlighted by a service ace and three kills from Raff. After a close second set went their way, the Bears completed the sweep in the third. Trailing 6-3, Ursinus reeled off ten unanswered points featuring a pair of kills by Piotrowicz and an ace from van Mulbregt and was never threatened again.

The first frame was the Bears' most lopsided set victory since 2013, when they routed Centenary 25-4, 25-6, 25-13.

Mallorie Deschaine sparked Marywood with 10 kills and 11 digs.

The Bears remain on the road as they travel to preseason Centennial Conference favorite Swarthmore to open up league play on Saturday, September 10.
