Volleyball opens up home play against Rutgers-Camden
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Playing in their home opener, the Ursinus College volleyball team battled Rutgers-Camden before coming up on the short side of a 3-0 loss to the Scarlet Raptors (2-3) on Tuesday night.
 
Set scores were 25-20, 25-15 and 26-14.
 
For Ursinus, the Bears (2-3) were led by sophomore outside hitter Allison Raff (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) with eight kills, while senior outside hitter Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins Senior) had three.
 
Freshman setter Cori Cichowicz (King of Prussia, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) had ten assists, with 19 digs coming from freshman defensive specialist Sydney Gonzalez (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough).
 
In the opening set, Ursinus took the lead on two attack errors before Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good with four straight points. Ursinus would get within one at 5-4 on a kill by Raff, but, would not get any closer.
 
In set number two, Rutgers-Camden took as much as an eight point lead before winning 25-15.
 
The third set was the tightest of the three, as Ursinus trailed 22-18 before rallying off five straight points to go up 23-22. During that time frame, Ursinus got an ace from Thiele and kills from Raff and freshman outside hitter Megan Gombatz (Farmington, Conn./Farmington).
 
Rutgers-Camden, however, got a kill from Olivia Rowland to tie the score at 23-all, before taking the last two points of the match.
 
Ursinus heads north to Smith to face Smith, Husson, Middlebury and Manhattanville in a two-day classic.
