Volleyball downed by Cairn, 3-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Returning home after a long road trip, the Ursinus College volleyball team battled Cairn for four sets before dropping a 3-1 decision. 

After winning the initial set 25-21, Cairn won the next three by scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-12. 

For Ursinus,  junior setter Gina Powers led the way with 12 kills with senior outside hitter Anahi McIntyre netting seven.

Sophomore Emily Van Mulbregt had 16 assists, with Powers getting six. 

Senior middle blocker Mara Berzins had a fine night with eight solo blocks.

Defensively, Powers and junior libero Leah Masiello each had 18 digs. 

For Cairn, Brigid Shehan had 11 kills.

In the first set, Ursinus rallied from a 5-2 decision to go up 6-5 via three attack errors. Down 8-7, Ursinus got a block from Berzins and a kill from Powers during four points swing to go up 11-8. 

Leading 19-17, Ursinus scored the next four points on a block and kill from Berzins and a block from Lindsay Doyle.

In the second set, Ursinus fell behind 5-0 and never got as close as 9-4. 

In the third set, Ursinus fell behind early by score of 9-3 and trailed 19-6 before going on a eight-point run capped by a kill from Powers to get within 19-14. The Bears would get within 20-15 but could not get any closer.

The final set saw Ursinus be on the other side of a run, as Cairn turned a 6-5 lead into a 14-5 lead and never looked back. 

Ursinus will host Dickinson on Saturday.
