Track and Field Hosts Collegeville Classic

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College track and field teams returned to action this evening, entertaining a large field in advance of Winter Storm Jonas with the annual Collegeville Classic. The Bears competed deep into the night, turning in several impressive efforts in their first meet of the spring semester.

The Ursinus women produced the lone title of the day for the Bears, as sophomore Jenna Kelly teamed with freshmen Riley Engel, Brittany Gasser, and Gabrielle Manto to capture the distance medley relay crown with a clocking of 13:55.95, almost 50 seconds ahead of Muhlenberg's second-place quartet.

Senior Elizabeth Cooley was second in the pole vault with a mark of 9.575 feet, within six inches of her personal best.

Senior Kristen Prijs crossed the line in fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.74) and ninth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.12). Fellow senior Krista Synder finished sixth in the long jump (16-0.25) and eighth in the triple jump (31-7.25), where freshman Caroline Buckley was seventh (31-9.25).

Kelly won the second heat of the 800 in an indoor personal best 2:34.20, good for seventh overall. Gasser matched her placing in the 400 with a season-best mark of 1:02.35. Engel was ninth in the mile, crossing the line in 5:40.70.

On the men's side, senior Erich Keyser notched a strong performance in the 60-meter hurdles, his prelims time of 9.13 seconds enough to qualify for the finals, where he blazed his way to a season-best clocking of 9.00 ticks flat, placing third.

Senior captain Andrew Mackin was fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.67 seconds, a personal best that stood as the best mark of the second heat.

Sophomore Joseph Iuliucci placed fourth in the 5k, clocking a time of 16:16.83; senior James Hartop was eighth in the event with a 17:00.13.

Sophomore Jequan Mitchell won his heat in the 60-meter dash (7.25) and just missed out on qualifying for the finals with an eighth-place performance. Freshman Adam Friend was eighth in the pole vault (10-5.50).

The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Samuel Pope, Mitchell, Mackin, and senior Skyler McCormick was runner-up with a time of 3:29.67.

The track and field teams head to George Mason University for the Patriot Games on Saturday, January 30.
