Seniors Star for Women's Tennis at WAC

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus College women's team received a brilliant effort from the bottom of its lineup in Tuesday's match at Washington College, but the Shorewomen's top-end strength was too much to overcome in a 6-3 Centennial Conference defeat.

Seniors Robin Alsher and Christine Palazzolo accounted for all three points for Ursinus (11-6, 3-5), teaming for an easy victory at third doubles before dominating their matches at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Washington College (9-5, 5-2), ranked 13th in the Atlantic South region, took the top two doubles contests and won the other four singles courts handily to improve their conference playoff hopes.

Alsher and Palazzolo gave the Bears a brief lead with an 8-2 rout of Mariah Thomas and Paige Rebstock at number three doubles. After the Shorewomen claimed the top two doubles tilts, Ursinus' senior tandem came up big again.

Palazzolo rolled Rebstock 6-1, 6-1 at number six, and Alsher was off the court just moments later with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Thomas in the fifth flight.

The Shorewomen won easily at first, third, and fourth singles to secure their victory. Freshman Caitlyn Sorelle put up plenty of resistance at number two, challenging Rachel Martinez in a narrow 7-6 (3), 6-4 setback.

With two more victories, Palazzolo became the fifth player in program history to reach 60 for her career. Her 13th singles win of the season put her in a tie for fourth, while Palazzolo and Alsher collected their 12th triumph together on the doubles court; only four other pairings have hit that number.

The Bears take on No. 15 Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
