SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team saw its remarkable winning streak against Division III competition come to an end with a 156-106 Centennial Conference setback at Swarthmore.

The Bears had won 70 consecutive dual meets against in-division foes since their last loss all the way back in December of 2012 – also to the Garnet.

Ursinus put its top-end talent on full display, taking first place in six of the first eight individual events. Katherine Champgane turned in an incredible display, winning the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM, while Sophie Lear brought home a pair of individual victories in the 100 free and 200 free and Katie Schultz captured the 1000 free and 200 fly. In the end, the Garnet's depth made all the difference.

Champagne and Lear bookended a runner-up medley relay to open the meet, and the Bears got to work with one win after another in the individual races.

Schultz began with a dominating effort in the 1000 free, registering the top time in the CC this season with a 10:55.12 that put her 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up from Swarthmore.

Lear followed with a victory in the 200 free (1:57.36), landing just shy of the premier clocking in the conference. Champagne was next up with the first leg of her treble, touching first in the 100 back (1:00.59).

Schultz, already the conference leader in the 200 fly, was just off her top pace with a 2:15.10. Lear fell a mere .08 seconds off her own season best with a 54.42 in the 100 free.

Champagne added a victory in the 200 back (2:14.39), and three races later came back to win the 200 IM in 2:16.23, edging Sophia Lee by about two-tenths of a second.

Katie Sanfield finished second in both the 50 free (25.61) and 100 fly (1:01.36), while Schultz was runner-up in the 500 free (5:20.87), only four-tenths of a tick off the winning pace.

Haley Sturla placed third in both the 100 breast (1:10.41) and 200 breast (2:33.22).

Sanfield, Liv Rachael, Margrethe Leis, and Lear teamed up to take second in the 400 free relay (3:44.51) in the final event of the afternoon.

The Bears look to begin a new streak next Saturday at McDaniel.
