Capodanno, Tierney Named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Corinne Capodanno and sophomore Olivia Tierney of the Ursinus College women's swimming team were two of the record 853 student-athletes selected to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team, the organization announced Wednesday. Capodanno was named to the first team – which honors student-athletes who have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective national championships – and Tierney collected honorable mention status, given to those who have garnered a 3.50 GPA and achieved a national "B" time standard or competed at a regional qualifying meet.

Capodanno, who ended her stellar career with a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Championships, is the only first team Scholar All-America nominee in the history of Ursinus swimming. Capodanno holds Centennial Conference records in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, 800-yard freestyle relay, and 400-yard medley relay in addition to a school record in the 100-yard freestyle.

One of only two three-time conference champions in the 200-yard freestyle, Capodanno was an All-American in the event a year ago. In 2016, she competed in the 50 free, the 100 free, and the 200 free at the Division III championships. A standout in the classroom all four years, Capodanno was one of four Ursinus student-athletes named to the Winter Academic All-Centennial Team, which recognizes sophomores, juniors, and seniors who earned all-conference recognition and carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.40. She was chosen to the CC Academic Honor Roll each of the three years in which she was eligible.

Tierney turned in a spectacular sophomore campaign highlighted by her second consecutive CC gold medal in the 200-yard breaststroke, making her the first Ursinus swimmer – and only the fifth in CC history – to win multiple titles in the event. Tierney's time of 2:22.96 qualified for a national "B" cut. An honorable mention Scholar All-American for the second time, Tierney holds school records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke in addition to the 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

Capodanno and Tierney were the only Centennial Conference female swimmers to receive Scholar All-America honors.
