Twice as Nice: Baker an All-American Again

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clara Baker experienced the thrill of becoming an All-American Thursday night. With a chance to recapture the magic less than 24 hours later, the Ursinus College freshman wasn't ready to give it up.

Baker set a new program record in the 200-yard butterfly prelims at the NCAA Division III championships, then obliterated it in the finals to place 10th overall and earn All-American status for the second time in as many nights. The freshman's sizzling time of 2:03.60 was more than 1.5 seconds ahead of her clocking in the prelims, which was already a second better than the previous school benchmark.

Baker is the first Ursinus freshman to earn multiple All-American honors since Jen Derstine in 1991.

Seeded 32nd in the event, Baker exceeded expectations and then some, lowering her seed time by well over two full seconds in preliminary action to place 13th with a clocking of 2:05.12 and earn a spot in the consolation finals. In the evening session, she shattered it again with a time that outpaced two swimmers in the final heat.

Baker's prelims time outpaced the previous school record – held most recently by sophomore Katherine Porter – by just over a second, making her the fourth swimmer to hold the school record this season. Her latest historic feat came a day after she became the first Ursinus freshman All-American in 25 years with a 15th-place performance in the 100-yard butterfly.

Freshman Peyten Lyons placed 22nd in the 100-yard backstroke prelims (56.78).

While Baker gets Saturday off after her remarkable weekend, senior Corinne Capodanno and Lyons will swim the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, respectively, as the national championships come to a close on Saturday.
