Women's Swimming Trio In Action on First Day of Division III Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A trio of Ursinus College swimmers got a taste of competition at the highest level as the NCAA Division III Championships got underway at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Wednesday morning.

Freshmen Peyten Lyons tested her mettle in the 200-yard IM for the Bears, while fellow rookie Clara Baker joined senior Corinne Capodanno in the 50-yard freestyle prelims.

Lyons finished 39th in the 200-yard IM prelims, clocking a time of 2:08.35. She came in with a seed time of 2:06.54, a Centennial Conference record set at last month's championship meet.

Baker established a new personal best with a 24.25 in the 50-yard freestyle prelims; that was good for 47th overall and stands as the third-best time in the Centennial Conference this season. Baker was seeded 49th in the event. Capodanno, meanwhile, touched the wall in 52nd place overall with a mark of 24.42, her best of the year.

Baker and Capodanno are back in action Thursday, with the former competing in the 100-yard butterfly and the latter in the 200-yard freestyle. Both figure to have solid chances to qualify for the finals in their respective events; Baker is seeded 11th (55.54), while Capodanno comes in as the 19th seed (1:52.11). A year ago, Capodanno garnered All-American honors by placing 16th, and her clocking of 1:50.75 set a new conference record.

The top 16 swimmers from each event earn All-American status, with the first eight student-athletes competing in the finals and the next eight in the consolation finals.

Lyons returns to the pool on Friday with the 100-yard backstroke prelims.
