Women's Swimming Wins 35th Straight Dual

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Just over 12 hours after returning from its winter trip to Florida, the Ursinus College women's swimming team extended its dual-meet winning streak to 35 with a 130-67 triumph over visiting Cabrini in its first dual of 2016.

Ursinus took the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay, a trio highlighted by sophomore Margaret Leitz, junior Alexandra Hemp, freshman Peyten Lyons, and freshman Clara Baker; that quartet touched the wall in 1:54.72, with senior Micaela Lyons, freshman Gabriella Timuscuk, senior Corinne Capodanno, and sophomore Katherine Porter placing second.

Freshman Julia Adams led a 1-2 showing in the mile freestyle, finishing in 19:08.4. Junior Allison Emick was runner-up.

Peyten Lyons was the 200-yard freestyle champion, registering a winning time of 1:59.60, nearly six seconds ahead of classmate Kathryn Longenecker. Sophomore Rachel Weil placed third in the event.

Freshman Samantha Kegel landed the runner-up spot in the 50-yard freestyle, completing the race about a quarter of a second behind Cabrini's Christina Melchiorre. Porter finished third, and junior Catherine Wilson was fourth.

Sophomore Olivia Tierney had a dominant showing in the 400-yard IM (4:53.31), finishing almost nine seconds abreast of freshman teammate Caroline Powell in second.

Junior Katherine Pielmeier cruised to victory in the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.68), with sophomore Reney Hess taking second and Wilson finishing third. The Bears boasted the top three swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle as well, Baker headlining the trio with a time of 54.83; Capodanno was the runner-up, and Hemp placed third.

Leitz posted a time of 2:14.31 to prevail in the 200-yard backstroke, with freshman Katherine Madden finishing second and Weil taking third. Timuscuk finished nearly nine seconds ahead of her competition in the 500-yard freestyle, where Longenecker and junior Marisa Ferrari were second and third, respectively.

The Bears used exhibition scoring for the final two events of the afternoon, starting with the 200-yard breaststroke. Powell's time of 2:37.73 was the best in the field, and she was succeeded by Kegel in second and Hemp in third.

Ursinus closed the meet with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the quartet of Hess, Leitz, Timuscuk, and Baker just edged out Ferrari, Peyten Lyons, Madden, and sophomore Sydney Gundersen.

The Bears get right back in the water tomorrow with a non-conference dual at Albright.
