Women's Swimming Extends Streak to 34

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team made it 34 straight dual meet wins - 21 in a row in the Centennial Conference - against the school that handed it its last loss almost exactly three years ago, racing past host Swarthmore by a count of 162-95.

Senior Corinne Capodanno (Claymont, Del./Padua Academy), freshman Peyten Lyons (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), and sophomore Olivia Tierney (Broomall, Pa./Villa Maria)  collected two individual victories apiece for the Bears (7-0, 4-0), who stayed perfect on the season with another impressive display. Ursinus hasn't lost a dual meet since December 8, 2012, in the same pool. Swarthmore fell to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

After Lyons teamed with Tierney, freshman Clara Baker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), and sophomore Sydney Gunderson (Reading, Pa./Exeter) to cruise to a first-place swim in the 400-yard medley relay (4:02.90), Capodanno dominated the 1000-yard freestyle, posting a time of 10:45.02 to touch the wall a whopping 36.33 seconds ahead of the runner-up, rookie teammate Kathryn Longenecker (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg).

Lyons followed with a convincing triumph in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.90) before Tierney pulled out one of her own in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.32).

Baker won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:12.35, just ahead of sophomore Margaret Leitz (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby), with junior Katie Pielmeier (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton) notching a third-place showing. Gunderson touched first in a tight 50-yard freestyle race, finishing just .13 and .16 ticks, respectively, in front of Swarthmore's second- and third-place swimmers.

Capodanno's second individual title came in the 100-yard freestyle (54.99), where she was five-hundredths of a second faster than Baker. Lyons followed with her own second triumph, a clocking of 2:13.74 in the 200-yard backstroke; Leitz was second. Tierney matched them with a first-place effort in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.97), where freshman Gabriella Timuscuk (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) was second.

Longenecker finished runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle, with junior Allison Emick (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) placing third. Sophomore Katherine Porter (Sayre, Pa./Sayre) was the pace-setter in a 1-2-3 showing for Ursinus in the 100-yard butterfly, with sophomore Irene Hess (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) taking second and Gunderson third.

Freshman Samantha Kegel (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke, with classmate Katherine Madden (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) third, and senior Micaela Lyons (Plainfield, N.J./Wardlaw-Hartridge School) fourth.
