Women's Swimming Rolls Past McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team left McDaniel with a comfortable 74-21 victory in a Centennial Conference meet Saturday afternoon.

The quartet of freshman Peyten Lyons (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), junior Katie Pielmeier (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton), freshman Clara Baker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), and senior Corinne Capodanno (Claymont, Del./Padua Academy) set the tone with a victory in the opening 200-yard medley relay, gaining seven points with a time of 1:51.81. Lyons followed that up with an impressive performance in the 200-yard freestyle, outpacing classmate Samantha Kegel (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) to win the event in 1:59.86.

Senior Sydney Gundersen (Reading, Pa./Exeter) (25.31) and junior Alexandra Hemp (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppague) (25.57) finished just .26 ticks apart in the 50-yard freestyle, and Pielmeier collected another victory with a 2:17.37 clocking in the 200 yard IM, ahead of freshman Katherine Madden (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia).  

Baker touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (58.66), with sophomore Katherine Porter (Sayre, Pa./Sayre) coming in second. Capodanno prevailed in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.81 – senior Micaela Lyons (Plainfield, N.J./Wardlaw-Hartridge School) was runner-up at 55.79 – before Lyons registered another victory, this time in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.93), where Kegel came in second.

Freshman Kathryn Longenecker (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) was second in the 1000-yard freestyle, with fellow rookie Julia Adams (Mohnton, Oa./Governor Mifflin) in third; both established new season bests in the event.  Sophomore Margaret Leitz (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) turned in a runner-up effort in the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.07).

The Bears return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, November 21, when they host Gettysburg at 1:00 p.m.
