Women's Soccer Downed by Diplomats

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Rachel Burcaw's penalty kick in the final minute of the first half gave the Ursinus College women's soccer team hope against Franklin & Marshall, but the Diplomats added on a pair of second-half insurance goals to claim a 4-1 Centennial Conference victory.

Nicolette Runko scored three goals and Meg O'Callahan finished with a goal and two assists for F&M (6-5-1, 2-4), as the first-year pair combined for all four markers.

The Diplomats took control early, slotting in two goals in the first 11 minutes. O'Callahan played a long ball ahead for Runko, who managed to toe-poke it over an on-rushing Sabrina Doherty for the fourth-minute opener.

F&M doubled its lead in the 11th minute, when O'Callahan curled a free kick from just outside the box on the left side into the upper left corner of the net.

The Bears pulled one back in the final minute of the first half. Burcaw was dragged down in the box as she chased a long pass, and the referee awarded a penalty. Burcaw took responsibility and delivered a perfect strike to the lower right corner of the net with 34.3 seconds remaining, trimming the deficit in half with her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

F&M went back on the offensive after the break and took a 3-1 lead when Runko headed a perfect cross into the top right corner of the net in the 63rd minute. She finished off her hat trick in the 86th, when O'Cllahan played her in one-on-one with a long ball and Runko slotted home for the final tally.

The Diplomats finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots, including 11-2 after halftime, and a 5-1 edge in corners.

Burcaw led the Bears with two shots, both on goal, and Doherty made three saves.

Ursinus returns to action at Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
