Doherty Dubbed CC Player of the Week

LANCASTER, Pa. – Freshman goalkeeper Sabrina Doherty was named the Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

The keeper earned the honors by recording two shutouts last week in a 0-0 draw with Haverford and a 1-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall – the first two clean sheets of her young career.

Doherty tallied five saves in the draw, but was even more spectacular in the team's first victory of the season. She was able to clear out a near-breakaway early in the second half, blasting the ball out of harm's way. She later one-upped herself twice, stopping a penalty shot from the Diplomat's leading scorer, Reanna Leoni, before blocking a point-blank shot on a breakaway.

The penalty shot attempt was a line drive toward the right corner, but Doherty's dive to the left allowed her to get a mitt on the ball, pushing it outside of the post. The breakaway was just as impressive, as the freshman stayed home as the attacker pushed forward, cutting down the angle before using her right leg to deflect the shot. Her five saves were the reason the Bears came away with the win.

Doherty is the first women's soccer player to receive conference player of the week honors this season.
