COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – From the first few minutes of the second half, it seemed that Sabrina Doherty was on another level.

After a dull first half between the Ursinus College women's soccer team and Franklin & Marshall, the freshman goalkeeper awoke. She was only forced to make one save in the first 45 minutes, but she was the reason the Bears were able to capture their first victory of the season in a 1-0 final.

The game-winning goal was scored by junior Bridget Rauh, who was crashing the net when freshman Angela Gervasi sent a pass in from about 40 yards out. After bouncing into the box, it found Rauh in stride as she deflected just enough of the ball to net her first career goal. Gervasi's assist was her first career point.

Shortly after the first tap of the second half, the Diplomats (5-5-1, 1-4-1) were on a run towards the Ursinus goal. A through-ball sprung a forward, but Doherty came sprinting out of her net and out of the box to blast the threat away for the Bears (1-7-2, 1-3-1).

She wasn't done there.

Ten minutes later, a foul was called inside the box on a Bears defender. F&M's leading goal-scorer, Reanna Leoni, the victim of the crime. The eight-goal scorer sent a line drive to the right corner, but Doherty made a diving stop, getting a hand on the ball and keeping it out of the net. The Diplomats had four corner kicks in a six-minute span following the save, but the Bears defense stood strong, refusing to allow a shot on three. Doherty stopped the one shot that F&M was able to manufacture.

Six minutes after the biggest save of her career, Doherty was challenged again, as a Diplomat player came barreling down the middle on a breakaway. As the forward got closer, Doherty stayed home, cutting down the angle until the attacker was within several feet of her. She was able to shoot out her right left to block the shot.

Doherty wrapped up the game with five saves, completing her second shutout in a row and – more importantly – her first career win.

Joining Doherty in that category is head coach Aileen Ascolese, who secured her first victory of her tenure with Ursinus.

The Bears travel to Muhlenberg on Wednesday looking to continue their winning ways. Their next home game is October 18 against Moravian.
