Women's Soccer Falls at High-Powered TCNJ

EWING, N.J. – Despite tying the game on a goal by senior Erin Farrell just before halftime, the Ursinus College women's soccer team fell victim to a TCNJ onslaught on Wednesday night, as the home side used a 33-3 disparity in shots to overcome the brilliant play of Courtney Sullivan for a 3-1 non-conference triumph.

Trailing 1-0 after a 19th-minute marker by Marissa Scognamiglio, Ursinus (1-3-1) surprised the high-powered Lions (2-0-1) with an equalizer at the 43:21 mark. Farrell collected a rebound and put it through for her team-leading third goal of the season, lifting the Bears into the break on hard-earned level ground.

Ursinus, however, went without a shot the rest of the way, and Sullivan could only keep TCNJ at bay for so long. Christine Levering's goal from 30 yards out put the hosts ahead for good at 50:15, and Elizabeth Thoresen added an insurance tally in the 80th minute for the Lions, who outshot Ursinus 22-0 after halftime.

Thoresen accounted for eight shots by herself – six of them on goal – and was supported on the attack by Levering (five shots), Scognamiglio (four), Jessica Goldman (four), and Hannah Richman (four) for TCNJ, the preseason NJAC favorite and an NCAA Tournament participant for the last 25 years. The Lions, who returned four all-conference performers, received a vote in this week's NSCAA poll.

Sullivan kept Ursinus within striking distance almost the whole way with one of the top performances of her career. The senior captain recorded a career-high 15 saves, the most by a Bear since 1998. Ten of Sullivan's stops came in the second half alone, including the 200th of her career.

The Bears got off their first shot in the 32nd minute, and junior Phoebe Shoap put it on frame to force a save from TCNJ's Jessica Weeder. A minute later, junior Kendall Couch sent a header high, putting some pressure on a Lions team that had accounted for the game's first eight shots. Farrell finally solved the Lions' back line later in the half, but it was not enough.

After a daunting five-game road trip to start the season – with games against No. 14 Misericordia and then-No. 24 SUNY Oneonta in addition to Arcadia and TCNJ, both receiving votes in the national poll – the women's soccer team finally comes home to open up its Patterson Field and Centennial Conference slate against Gettysburg. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17. The game will be a rematch of last season's CC first-round clash, won by the Bears in penalty kicks after 110 scoreless minutes.
