ONEONTA, N.Y. – Freshman Sarah Wixted scored her first collegiate goal to help the Ursinus College women's soccer team erase a second-half deficit and leave with a 1-1 tie against No. 24 Oneonta State in the final game of the annual Mayor's Cup on Sunday. Senior Jeannie Jasinski was chosen as the Offensive MVP of the tournament, while senior Kelly Rosen joined juniors Anna Budny and Phoebe Shoap on the all-tournament team.
Wixted's monumental marker was also a first for Budny, who registered her first collegiate point on the play. With Ursinus (1-2-1) trailing 1-0, Wixted latched on to Budny's cross into the box. Her initial header attempt was saved by Oneonta goalie Emilie Mull, but the Bears' rookie midfielder was able to one-touch the rebound into the back of the net for the equalizer at the 61:16 mark.
Neither side was able to dent the scoreboard from there, though there were chanches. The Red Dragons (2-2-1) enjoyed a 19-9 advantage in shots, but Ursinus senior goalkeeper Courtney Sullivan made seven saves, including two in the extra sessions, to preserve the draw.
Junior Katie Bell forced a save from Mull with a header in the first minute of the second overtime period.
It took only 20 seconds for Ursinus to put a shot on goal, an effort from senior Erin Farrell that forced a save from Mull. But it was the tournament hosts who drew first blood, a header by Seaver Lipshie off a corner by Julia Kranz that granted the Red Dragons a lead in the 26th minute.
Wixted and Jasinski tallied two shots each for the Bears, who played their first overtime contest of the season.
Amanda Roney racked up five shots for the Red Dragons, with Emily Opalinski adding four, including one that was stopped by Sullivan in the 104th minute.
Mull finished with five saves for Oneonta, which held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Ursinus concludes its five-game, season-opening road swing at TCNJ on Wednesday, September 14 before welcoming Gettysburg to Patterson Field for the Bears' Centennial Conference and home opener.
