Carter Advances to World Team Trials

2022 USAW Last Chance Qualifier Brackets

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ. - Five members of the Ursinus College wrestling team wrapped up their weekends competing at the 2022 USAW Last Chance Qualifier.

Senior Jason Carter became the first Bear to ever qualify for the World Team Trials after a perfect weekend and a first-place finish. In his first match, Carter won by technical superiority by a score of 15-5 over Jaden Sonner from Campbellsville University. He won the individual title at 97 kg after his second opponent Ryan Law withdrew from the tournament. Sonner defeated Law 10-0 in the first round of the day.

"I could not be happier for Jason," head coach Joe Jamison said. "He has been talking about competing after college for years and this puts him on the map. Most wrestlers only dream of the opportunity to compete at the World Team Trials. He has more to learn with regards to his transition to Freestyle, but he is well on his way."

Junior Shawn Marchesano (74 kg) earned a fourth-place finish after going 3-2 on the weekend. Marchesano opened his afternoon with a 10-0 defeat to Elroy Perkin of TMWC but battled back in the consolations winning his next two matches by technical superiority. He defeated Tommy Lascala of Long Island University by a score of 10-0 and followed up with a 12-2 decision over Hunter Shaut of Buffalo University. Marchesano moved on into the consolation finals after an opponent withdrew and fell 10-0 in the third-place bout.

Sophomore Jackson Brandt (86kg) had an impressive weekend, winning his first two bouts before falling in the semifinals. Brandt won his first match in just 44 seconds after a clean throw from neutral position put his opponent Harjot Singh (NY) onto his back. The Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey product defeated his next opponent in just 55 seconds before falling to the #1 seed Jonathan Lowe from Cornell in the semifinals.

Dante Monaco (70kg) also captured a victory in his opening match after he countered an inside trip from Hekmatullah Hussaini that led to a fall. In the consolations, Monaco fell by superiority 10-0 to Ryan Anderson from Binghamton University, who would go on to place third at 70kg.

Junior Amir Pickens (125kg) went 0-2 respectively, in his first match he fell to the #1 seed Derek White by technical superiority. In the consolations, Pickens fell by fall with the score 8-6 at the time.

"Our performance this weekend was a noticeably big step for the program," head coach Joe Jamison said. "We have seen a shift in culture over the past few years with a group of guys who want to get better every day, and that takes a lot of time and work on your own in the off-season when you wrestle D3. These guys have been in the room a lot getting things done and dedicating themselves to the sport. All five guys this weekend did a fantastic job, and for a D3 program to finish 5th with only five athletes at this tournament in outstanding."

Next up, Carter will travel to Coralville, Iowa to compete at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament at the Xtream Arena on May 21st.
