Bears Place 11th at New Standard Invitational

YORK, PA. - The Ursinus College wrestling team got back into action this weekend at York College for the New Standard Invitational. Shawn Marchesano finished third in the 157-pound bracket to lead the Bears who finished with 39 team points.

Romeo Rodriguez had an impressive outing, placing sixth at 133lbs due to a medical default after his consolation semifinals match. Rodriguez entered the tournament unseeded but knocked off the fourth and ninth seed for his sixth-place finish.

After dropping his first match, Rodriguez battled through the consolation bracket winning four straight matches before falling in the consolation semifinals to Joseph Jones of Averett who placed third.

Marchesano went 5-1 overall on the weekend, only losing to the eventful champion at 157lbs. He won his first three matches of the tournament, defeating each opponent by pinfall. In the quarterfinals, trailing 6-0 in the second period, Marchesano ended up pinning Tyler Abis of Johnson and Wales University. In the consolation finals, Shawn defeated Adam Wagner of Ithaca 9-7, Wagner is currently ranked 14th in the country and 2nd in the Mideast Region.

The Bears placed four wrestlers into the quarterfinals including Jagger Clapsadle (133), Marchesano (157), Stone Franczyk (157), and Jason Zollers (174).

Gavin Range (285) picked up two wins for the Bears including a pinfall over Caleb Calhoun of Averett in the Consolation round of 8.

"The guys we brought wrestled hard," coach Joe Jamison said. "This is one of the tournaments in the country and the experience our young guys got this weekend will pay off. There were some obvious bright spots and some things for us to work on, but overall, we're proud of how we competed."

The Bears will return to action Friday, December 10 as they travel to Franklin & Marshall.
