Four Wrestlers Place at Regionals

ITHACA, N.Y. – Jason Carter finished in fourth at 197 pounds to lead a quartet of place-winners for the Ursinus College wrestling team on the final day of competition at the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Carter and Terry Adams each got within one win of an NCAA Championship berth, but were unable to punch their ticket as the Bears wrapped up a strong campaign under first-year head coach Joe Jamison.

Adams placed fifth at 125, while Kyle Schaffer was sixth at 184 and Jake Folk finished eighth at 157.

Carter opened with a 13-6 victory over Brockport's Devon Shader, taking the lead for good with a reversal late in the first period before surging ahead.

With his season on the line, Carter went into overtime knotted at 1-1 with Cortland's Dylan Dubuque. A takedown with 19 seconds remaining in the extra session sent Carter into the third-place bout and a rematch with RIT's John Donohue, who scored a 16-4 victory in their quarterfinal matchup.

Carter got off to a fast start with an early takedown, only for Donohue to escape and flip the momentum with a takedown of his own. Donohue tacked on two near-fall points and added another takedown in the second period en route to a 10-4 decision.

Needing one victory to stamp his spot at nationals, Adams got off to a fast start with an immediate takedown of Brockport's Matt Caccamise, Division III's fifth-ranked wrestler, in their semifinal clash. But Caccamise escaped and caught Adams in a cradle, ultimately pinning Adams with about a minute remaining in the first period.

That sent the rookie into the consolation bracket, where he'd need back-to-back wins to clinch third place. Scranton's Matthew Murawski had other plans, picking up six quick points on a takedown and a near fall on the way to a 9-5 decision. Adams ended his incredible debut season on a high, pinning Elizabethown's Austin Jones in just 25 seconds to secure fifth place.

Schaffer received a walk-through to the consolation semifinals because of a medical forfeit, putting him two wins shy of a trip to the NCAA championship. He was denied by Centenary's Kenny Long, who pulled away for an 11-1 major decision, before losing by pin to TCNJ's Daniel Surich in the fifth-place bout.

Folk was on the short end of a tough defeat to Elizabethtown's Brian Schneider, who was the beneficiary of a video review in a 6-4 decision. Folk jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second period, but Schneider responded with a late takedown in the frame and went ahead to stay with four near-fall points. The Bears appealed for an illegal hold, but the review system was not functioning and the result stood.

Folk wrapped up his season with a 4-3 loss to Brockport's Zack Brown, who notched a takedown in the closing seconds.
