Wrestling Takes Three From No. 17 Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ursinus College wrestling team got the best of three bouts in a 35-12 loss at No. 17 Stevens on Sunday.

Senior Christopher Tan got the Bears (5-5, 0-5) off to a fast start against the Ducks, who have won the last three Centennial Conference championships and have three wrestlers ranked in the top five of their respective weight classes by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

Tan ran his unbeaten streak to 13 with a 5-2 decision over Joey Borai at 125 in a matchup of grapplers who fall under "contender" status of the d3wrestle.com rankings, just outside the top-10 nationally. The senior star is now 16-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in conference matches.

Stevens (9-3, 5-0) picked up two pins and pair of technical falls in the next six bouts. Troy Stanich, the nation's top-ranked wrestler, started the run with a 12-0 major decision over Ursinus freshman Ray Calderaio at 133 to keep his unblemished mark intact.

Ursinus won two of the last three bouts, starting with a pin by freshman Ben Maack at 184. Maack, who now leads the team with nine falls, took down Bruce Parola in 2:46 and has won his last four bouts via pin.

Junior William McGinley capped the match with a 5-3 victory over Joe Moreno at heavyweight. Maack and McGinley are each 3-2 in CC competition this season.

The wrestling team, in search of its first conference win, heads to McDaniel on Saturday to take on the host Green Terror and Gettysburg in the last set of duals before the CC championships.
