COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team won its last three bouts – two of them by pin – to turn a tight match with Temple into a comfortable 33-18 victory on Sunday morning.
Freshmen Daniel Bliss, Jake Folk, and Ben Maack all prevailed by fall, as did junior William McGinley, to help the Bears (5-3) shake off a pair of Centennial Conference setbacks at Johns Hopkins one day earlier.
Freshman Matt Wilde was the beneficiary of a forfeit to open the dual. After freshman Ray Calderaio dropped a tight 6-5 decision at 133, Bliss took Jake Yoder to the mat in 1:37 to stake Ursinus to a 12-3 lead.
Temple got back in it with a fall at 149, but Folk downed Dan Rodriguez in just 52 seconds at 157 to restore a nine-point advantage.
The Owls made things interesting by winning the next two bouts, one by pin, to bring an 18-all tie after seven matches.
Maack put the Bears in front for good by pinning Nat Stemple in 1:44 at 184.
Senior Deon Edmond trailed 2-1 to Ernie Tessein at 197, but took the lead with a takedown and held on for a 4-2 victory to continue his recent hot streak. McGinley then put a bow on the Ursinus victory by pinning Scott Betts in 2:06 at heavyweight.
The wrestling team goes for its first CC win of the season on Tuesday, when the Bears welcome Muhlenberg to Helfferich Hall.
