COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team got a full day of action in during the annual North/South Duals on Saturday, winning four of its five matches in dominating fashion inside the Floy Lewis Bakes Center field house.
Senior William McGinley was a perfect 4-0 at heavyweight for the Bears, who suffered a 28-10 setback to Merchant Marine in their Centennial Conference opener before stacking four convincing victories in a row. Classmate Christopher Tan had three wins of his own to stretch his personal winning streak to eight.
With four more to his ledger, Ursinus head coach Bill Racich moved past TCNJ's David Icenhower and into fourth in NCAA history with 535 career dual victories. Racich is the second winningest boss in Division III history, trailing only Olivet College's Jare Kline (569).
Merchant Marine 28, Ursinus 10
Ursinus scripted a strong start when Tan netted a 7-3 decision over Jace Garza at 125, and Gulotta followed with an 8-0 shutout of Tyler Craig at 133.
But the Mariners produced back-to-back pins as part of a run of seven straight victories, stopped only by McGinley's 2-1 edging of Brandon Joest at heavyweight.
Ursinus 47, Hunter 6
The Bears bounced back with a rout of Hunter in the teams' second consecutive meeting at this event. Freshman Matt Wilde started it off with a 20-2 technical fall at 125 and, after a forfeit at 133, fellow rookie Daniel Bliss picked up a 7-1 victory at 141.
Junior Patrick Rowe blanked John Sherlock for a 16-0 tech fall at 149 before Hunter's Sean Miller scored a pin at 157 for the visitors' lone points.
Junior Jarret DiGiantomasso got the Bears back on track with a 15-3 major decision at 165, and Anthony Cutrufello pinned his opponent in 4:25 at 174. Freshman Garrett Boures was awarded his first collegiate win with a forfeit at 184.
Senior Deon Edmond needed only 47 seconds to take his foe to the mat at 197, and McGinley made it two wins in a row with a second-period pin in the heavyweight bout.
Ursinus 28, Penn College 25
After Tan received a forfeit at 125, freshman Ray Calderaio earned a technical fall at 133 in his first action of the afternoon.
Penn College got on the board thanks to an injury default at 141, but junior Edward Howlette nailed down a tech fall of his own at 157 for Ursinus.
The Bears lost the next four contested bouts, but picked up two forfeits and were able to hold on.
Ursinus 57, Rhode Island College 0
The Bears put on a display of complete dominance in their fourth match of the day, registering six pins and a tech fall in addition to a pair of forfeits.
All but one of the falls occurred in the first period, including Wilde's at 125 (1:03), Gulotta at 133 (1:49), junior Patrick Ammirati at 141 (2:52), Goranson at 165 (1:00), and Maack at 184 (1:40). Cutrufello took his foe to the mat in 3:30 at 174.
Additionally, McGinley notched a technical fall at heavyweight, and Rowe recorded a major at 157.
Ursinus 54, Mount Saint Vincent 4
Ursinus closed the day with another rout. Tan pinned his opponent in just over a minute at 125, and Calderaio received a forfeit.
Following their lone bout loss, the Bears finished with four pins and three forfeits. Dellicompagni dropped his adversary at 149 in a mere 35 seconds for his first win of the season, and Goranson secured his second fall of the day at 165.
Senior Patrick Rafferty had a pin at 174, and McGinley polished off his unblemished performance with a fall in the heavyweight clash.
