Tan Takes Third at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Christopher Tan won all three of his matches to garner third place in the 125-pound bracket at Messiah's Petrofes Invitational on Sunday, leaving the two-day tournament with a six-bout winning streak in tow.

Tan was one of four wrestlers to see the final day of competition for the Bears, who placed ninth in the team standings with 61 total points.

Freshman Jake Folk placed sixth at 157, while freshmen Charlie Wildermuth edged junior teammate Zebulin Pfeiffer in the seventh-place match at 197.

Tan, who won three straight consolation matches after dropping his first bout, repeated the feat on Saturday to take third prize. He pinned Greensboro's Matthew Insogna in 2:51 to set up a rematch with Messiah's Sean Redington, who had upset Tan the day before. Tan made sure it would not happen again, this time defeating Redington by a 9-5 count to advance to the third-place bout, where he downed Muskingum's Jordan Burkholder by the same score to run his winning streak to six.

Folk started his day with a victory by injury default against a wrestler from Waynesburg, guaranteeing a top-six finish. The Bears' rookie settled for sixth after a 10-1 loss to Messiah's Dan Swarr and a 7-6 nail-biter against West Virginia Tech's Leland Swafford.

Pfeiffer came up on the short end of a tiebreaker versus Alderson Broaddus' Alex Eaton, while Wildermuth lost by fall to Muhlenberg's Gennaro Cerminara. That pitted the two Bear teammates against each other for seventh place, which Wildermuth captured with a 12-9 triumph.

The wrestling team takes its annual winter sojourn to Orlando for the Citrus Invitational. The two-day tournament begins Friday, December 29.
