Jasinski still alive at NCAA Wrestling Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Four members of the Ursinus College wrestling team competed on Friday at the NCAA Championships. Of those four, only one wrestler advanced to Saturday, which guarantees him All-American status. 


Junior 157-pounder Richie Jasinski (Sellersville, Pa.) will wrestle on Saturday, while sophomore 165-pounder Anthony Carlo (Staten Island, N.Y.), junior 197-pounder Christian Psomas (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman 285-pounder Matan Peleg (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) all saw their tournament runs come to an end on Friday with two losses. 

Jasinski started with a bout against Mark Savenok of Wheaton (Ill.), in which he trailed 2-1 after the first following a takedown, but, Jasinski got an escape. Another escape in the second period for Jasinski tied the match at 2-all, before Savenok got an escape and a takedown in the third to take the bout 5-2.

In his first match in the wrestlebacks, Jasinski defeated Kevin Collins of Ithaca, 3-1. After a scoreless first period, a takedown with 40 seconds left in the second gave Jasinski a 2-1 lead. He earned an escape 14 seconds into the third for the final 3-1 edge. 

In his second wrestleback match against Brett Yonkovic of Wartburg, he scored a takedown with ten seconds left in the match to take a 3-1 win.

Carlo started his day with an 11-2 major decision over Josh Sampson of Wabash. In the first period, Carlo led 4-1 with a takedown with 2:02 left, then scored another takedown with 20 seconds left in the first.

In the second, Carlo had two takedowns and a two-point nearfall for a 10-2 lead. He earned an escape in the third for his 11th point of the match.

In the quarters against Kristopher Schimek of Ithaca, he led 4-1 after the first via two takedowns. In the second, he scored all three points for a 7-1 lead, before Schimek got three nearfalls in the final 1:30 for the 10-7 win.

In the wrestlebacks, he lost to Dylan Foley of Springfield by a 7-4 score, after leading 4-3 after two periods. 

Psomas lost his opening bout to Punahele Soriano of Wartburg, 6-5. Soriano got all six of his points in the first period on three take downs. Psomas nearly pulled off the comeback, getting an escape in the second period, then getting a penalty point and a point for riding time in the third. 

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Eric Bach of Wilkes, 12-3. In the first, he got a takedown with 2:25 left, then scored six points in the second period. In the third, he got points via an escape, take down and riding time. 

He dropped his final bout to Shane Parcel of Roger Williams when he was pinned 1:18 into the match.

Peleg was pinned in his opening bout by third-seed Cody Kasprick of Concordia-Morehead in 4:37, then lost to Kyle McGuire of Trinity (Conn.) in double overtime when McGuire got an escape in the second extra period.
