Wrestling goes 4-0 at North/South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus, ranked 21st in Division III, finished a perfect 4-0 at the 2014 North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus Saturday afternoon.

The Bears, who have lost just two dual matches in the last two seasons, defeated Trinity (Conn.) to start the day 39-9 and then dispatched Hunter, 37-6.

In the third bout of the day, the Bears beat King's (Pa.) 36-9 and then ended the competition with a 35-6 win over Wesleyan (Conn.)

In the Trinity bout, Ursinus (7-0) went up 18-0 after three weight classes due to forfeit. Zachary Fisher (125), Christian Hoogheem (133) and Alex Kramer (141) all picked up forfeit wins.

At 149, Derek Arnold got an 8-0 major decision win over Jeremy Rees, followed by another major decision at 157 from Richard Jasinski over John Williams, 14-3.

At 165, Gnoleba (Hans) Seri, defeated Evan Robinson, 7-4, before Robert Scaramuzza pinned Michael Ragazzi at 174 in 1:14.

Ursinus got its last points of the match at 184, when Daniel Manganaro defeated Joseph Gerish, 12-4.

Against Hunter, junior Christopher Donaldson, ranked number one in the country by InterMat wrestling, defeated Kenneth Albert 7-5. After Hunter tied the score at 3-all after 133, Ursinus won the next seven matches to go up 37-3. The highlights were two pins from Curtis Watkins at 149 and Jasinski at 157, followed by a technical fall from Anthony Carlo at 165 and major decisions from Scaramuzza and Manganaro.

At 197, Taylor Gload picked up a forfeit.

Against King's, Fisher started the match with an 11-0 decision over Jamie Scarantino at 125, followed by forfeit wins from Hoogheem and Kramer at 133 and 141. At 149, Arnold defeated Christian Mazzochi, 5-0, with Jasinski picking up a 16-5 major decision over Keith Wanamaker. At 165, Carlo defeated Gordon Custer, 12-4, followed by a forfeit win from Scaramuzza and a 3-1 decision win  for Manganaro at 184 over Shane Stark.

Finally, Ursinus won the first three bouts against Wesleyvan, taking a 9-0 lead. Fisher defeated James Hamilton, 10-8, followed by Danny Ventura with a 9-5 win over Frank Crippen at 133. Elisha Gaylor defeated Matthew Pelton at 141 by a 6-4 score.

At 157, Jasinski defeated Edward Pierce by major decision, 13-4, followed by Carlo going for a 15-3 major decision win over Taran Carr.

Manganaro pinned James Kellner ay 184 in 3:55, followed by forfeit wins for Gload and Karch Connors at 285.

Ursinus will host West Chester on Tuesday, then the Will Abele Invitational next weekend, before heading into the Centennial Conference dual meet schedule.
