Donaldson finishes sixth at NCAAs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Ursinus sophomore wrestler Christopher Donaldson (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) finished sixth at the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday afternoon, wrestling at 125 pounds.

Donaldson, who earned All-American status on Friday night by advancing to the semifinals, dropped his semifinal match to Jimmy Gotto of Coe by a 6-2 score on Saturday morning.

In the wrestleback semifinals, he lost another decision this time to Isaac Balsiger of University of Wisconsin-La Carosse3-2. In the fifth place match, Donaldson lost to Miguel Venecia of Elmhurst by a 6-4 score.

Against Gotto, Donaldson trailed after the first period 2-0 as Gotto earned a takedown with 58 seconds left in the period. Gotto would score the only points of the second period, as he got an escape with 1:51 left in the period.

In the third, Donaldson got within two at 3-1 with an escape with 1:47 left. However, Gotto would get a takedown with 14 seconds left to go up 5-1, before Donaldson got an escape with two seconds left to earn another point. Gotto was awarded a point on riding time to make the final score 6-2.

In his second match against Balsiger, Donaldson led after the second period after he got an escape with 1:39 left in the period. However, Balsiger would get an escape just five seconds in to the third to tie the score, then got a takedown with 1:29 left to take a 3-1 lead. Donaldson got another escape with 1:07 left but could not get any closer.

In the fifth place bout, Venecia got a takedown with 2:19 left in the first to take an early lead, before Donaldson got an escape with 1:35 to trail 2-1 after the first period. In the second, Donaldson escaped 12 seconds in to tie the score at 2-all and account for the only scoring in the second frame.

In the third, Venecia escaped four seconds into the period, then got a take down with 39 seconds left to make the score 5-2. Donaldson would get a reversal with 35 seconds left, but Venecia would get another escape with 28 seconds left to ice the match.

Donaldson finished the year with 35 wins and is Ursinus' first All-American since since Mike Troutman earned honors back in 2006 with a fifth place finish.
