Shorewomen Use 4th Quarter Surge Past Women's Lacrosse

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-4 halftime lead, but Washington College outscored the Bears 5-1 in the final period and escaped Patterson Field with a 10-7 victory.  

With the loss, Ursinus falls to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Shorewomen improved to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play.  

Senior Reilly Morgan shined early in the first period scoring the first two goals of the contest. For her first goal, Morgan cut to the front of the net as first-year Grace Lynch found her for the 1-0 lead at the 8:35 mark. For her second goal, Morgan picked up a rebound in front of the net and snuck a low shot past the Washington goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead. The Shorewomen answered with back-to-back goals over the final six minutes to tie the game at two a piece at the end of the first period.  

Washington College carried the momentum into the second period, gaining their first lead of the contest at the 13:58 mark after senior midfielder Molly Sharpe found the back of the net. The Bears answered with a 3-0 run after Tori Rubin, Maeve Leonzi, and Morgan each scored over the next six minutes.  

Julia McCann found Rubin who made a move on her defender leading to her first goal of the game at the 12:46 mark, tying the game at three apiece. Morgan used a beautiful behind the back shot for her third goal of the contest, giving the Bears a 5-3 lead with 4:23 to play in the half. The Shorewomen responded with a goal at the 2:38 mark from Sharpe to cut their deficit to one at halftime.  

Each team's defenses stepped up in the third period as both offenses struggled to find the back of the net. Washington's Sharpe tied the game at five a piece with 3:31 to play and the Bears answered with a free position goal from Lynch with 14 seconds in the period. Junior goalkeeper Alexa Machado earned two crucial saves in the third period as the Bears held a 6-5 advantage heading into the fourth.  

The Shorewomen tied the game at six a piece with 12:47 to play, but the Bears answered after Lynch found the back of the net at the 10:32 mark for a 7-6 edge. Washington College used four unanswered goals over the final ten minutes of play for a 10-7 victory.  

Morgan led the Bears on offense with a hattrick while Lynch added two goals. Machado earned 13 saves in goal for the Bears, while Washington's netminder Sydney Wingate earned just four saves for her fifth win of the season. The Shorewomen held an 11-10 edge in draw controls and a 31-16 advantage in shots.  

Ursinus will return to action on Saturday as they travel to McDaniel for a 12pm start against the Green Terror.
