First Period Deficit Dooms Women's Lacrosse at Dickinson

CARLISLE, PA. - Senior Reilly Morgan and first-year Maeve Leonzi each scored five goals as the Bears fell on the road at Dickinson on Saturday afternoon. Ursinus was unable to overcome the first-period deficit as they fell 20-14 to the Red Devils in Centennial Conference action at Biddle field.  

With the loss, the Bears fell to 7-5 and 2-2 in conference play, Meanwhile, the Red Devils improved to 2-7 and 1-3 in Centennial Conference action.  

The Bears jumped on the board first after Rachel Doubet found Leonzi for her 30th goal of the season at the 14:03 mark of the first period. Dickinson answered with back-to-back goals and held a 2-1 advantage after Liv Yeagle and Syd MacKeigan each found the back of the net.  

Ursinus tied the game at two a piece after Leonzi scored her second of the game, after an assist from Gabreille Liott at the 11:47 mark. Dickinson quickly responded with a 2-0 run after Yeagle and Delaney Herbert each scored for a 4-2 edge with 11 minutes to play in the first period.  

After a green card on Dickinson's Emma Wynne, Reilly Morgan capitalized for a goal to cut the deficit to just one at the 7:10 mark of the first period. The Red Devils closed the period on a 3-0 run and earned a 7-3 lead after the first period. The resilience of the Bears showed in the second period after Morgan and Leonzi opened with goals to cut the Red Devils lead to just two.  

After Yeagle scored for Dickinson, Grace Lynch scored her first goal of the contest on a free position shot at the 8:36 mark of the second period. Both teams traded goals, before Dickinson ended the first half on a 2-0 run and controlled an 11-7 lead at halftime.  

The Bears opened the second half with a save by junior goalkeeper Alexa Machado that led to a goal on the opposite end from Leonzi after an assist from Morgan. Dickinson followed up with a goal from Riley Kuehn, but the Bears made it a 12-10 contest after back-to-back goals from Julia McCann and Morgan at the 5:01 mark.  

The Red Devils closed the period on a 2-0 run after Emma Wynne scored back-to-back goals and Dickinson led 14-10 after three periods. Dickinson opened the fourth period with back-to-back goals from Yeagle and stretched the score to 16-10. Ursinus answered with a 3-0 run, after Andrea Hook, Leonzi, and Morgan each scored to make the score 16-13 with 10:43 to play.  

Just twelve seconds later, Dickinson answered with a goal from Wynne assisted by Delaney Herbert. The Bears responded with a 2-1 run after Morgan scored on a free position shot and Doubet scored at the 8:50 mark after an assist from Mary Michaud. The Red Devils closed the contest with a 3-0 run after Wynne, Faith Parker, and Yeagle each scored for a 20-14 finish.  

Dickinson's goalie Ella Marks earned the win in net after saving 10 shots, meanwhile Alexa Machado saved 16 shots for the Bears in 60 minutes of action. Dickinson held an 22-14 advantage in draw controls and outshot the Bears by a 49-26 total.  

Ursinus will return to action next Saturday as they host Franklin & Marshall for a 3pm start from Patterson field.
