Fourth Quarter Comeback Leads Women's Lacrosse over Stockton

GALLOWAY, NJ. - The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team earned a hard-fought win after a comeback victory over Stockton University Wednesday evening. The Bears finished the fourth period on a 6-0 run and defeated the Ospreys 15-12 in non-conference play.  

With the win, Ursinus improves to 3-2 overall and snapped a one-game skid. Meanwhile, Stockton of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) fell to 3-3 overall. The Bears outscored the Ospreys 7-2 in the final period after trailing 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter.  

Stockton won the opening draw control and scored their first shot of the contest after Jennifer Toal capitalized on a free position shot at the 14:16 mark. Later in the first, after a successful clear attempt Stockton's Holly Yannacone found the back of the net to make the score 2-0. The Ospreys made it 3-0 lead after a woman-up opportunity allowed Allie Bremer to sneak one past the Bears goalkeeper at the 8:11 mark. First year Maeve Leonzi responded a few minutes later after Reilly Morgan found her in front of the net for her first goal of the game. Later in the first period, the Bears were on a woman-up opportunity and Morgan found the back of the net with one second left on the clock to make the score 3-2 at the end of the first.  

In the second period, Stockton opened with a 2-0 run after Casey Shultz scored goals at the 14:08 and 10:45 marks. Morgan and the Bears responded with a goal at the 6:11 mark to make the score 5-3. Senior Tori Rubin found Morgan cutting to the net for her second goal of the contest and third of the season. Stockton's Michelle Pascrell made the score 6-3 at the 5:32 mark after her previous shot missed wide. Grace Lynch and the Bears answered closing out the half on a 3-0 run after she scored her first two goals of the game. Lynch's goals both came on free positions shots and she capitalized to tie the game at six a piece heading into halftime. Sophomore Gabrielle Liott scored her fourth goal of the season, after Stockton was given a yellow card at the 2:55 mark.  

Both teams struggled in the opening minutes of the third period after each defense caused a turnover, but after a clean, clear attempt by Ursinus, Leonzi made the score 7-6 Ursinus at the 8:04 mark. Next, each team capitalized on man up opportunities as Stockton's Nikki Owen and the Bears' Rachel Doubet netted goals to make the score 8-7. Stockton closed out the third period on a 3-0 run and held a 10-8 advantage heading into the fourth.  

In the final period Stockton jumped out to a 12-10 advantage after each team scored two goals apiece. On the following draw control, Stockton's Jennifer Toal was delt a yellow card (2nd of the game) and the Ospreys would be down a player for the final 10 minutes. The Bears responded with three straight goals and held a 13-12 edge with 8:51 to play. Lynch, Leonzi, and Morgan each added goals over the two-minute span to give the Bears the lead. On the following Ospreys possession Allie Bremer had a chance in front of the net to tie the game, but a crucial save from junior goalkeeper Alexa Machado kept the Bears ahead. After an Ospreys turnover, Leonzi scored her fourth goal of the game to give the Bears a two-point advantage. Just a minute later, Leonzi would cap off a career day with her fifth goal of the contest as the Bears enjoyed a 15-12 victory.  

For the Bears, Machado earned the win in goal collecting 16 saves on 28 shot attempts. First-years Leonzi and Lynch each recorded a career high in goals for the Bears. Leonzi finished with five goals and one assist and Lynch earned four goals and two assists. Stockton held a 35-27 edge in shots and an 18-13 advantage in ground balls. The Bears were successful on 87% (20-23) of their clear attempts, meanwhile Stockton successfully cleared 94% (16-17) of their attempts. 

The Bears will return to Patterson Field on Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Drew University at 3pm.
