Stockton Surges Past Women's Lax

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team controlled the early portion of the first half and parts of the closing stages of the second, but visiting Stockton dominated the space between and left Patterson Field with a 16-7 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ospreys held the Bears scoreless for a stretch of more than 30 minutes bridging intermission and dominated the draw, eventually pulling away for good down the stretch in their season opener.

The Bears (0-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of quick-fire goals, both strangely coming shortly after an Ursinus player was sent to the sidelines for a yellow card. Grace Langen opened the scoring, driving around a defender at the post and finishing with a left-handed shot. About a minute later, Hanna Crowley fed a perfect pass from behind the net to Reilly Morgan, who dunked it to double the Bears' advantage.

Stockton responded with four unanswered goals, and Ursinus was held scoreless for almost 14 minutes until Crowley swept around the right post and shoveled a shot into the open right side of the cage. Morgan converted a free-position opportunity to level the score at 4-4 at the 8:18 mark, but the Ospreys ran off another stretch of four consecutive makers to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.

The Ospreys tacked on three more to their lead before Hannah Reape stopped the bleeding with a highlight-reel goal, picking up her own blocked shot and sending a diving shot into the back of the cage. Reape netted again on a beautiful pass from Crowley, and Crowley distributed yet another assist as Langen finished off a long pass to slice the Stockton lead to 11-7 with 3:47 to play.

Stockton stopped the Bears' rally in its tracks, ripping off five more goals in the closing minutes.

Jennifer Toal finished with five goals, an assist, and seven draw controls for the Ospreys, which controlled a massive 21-3 advantage in the circle. Casey Shultz led all players with eight points on five goals and three assists. Stockton outshot the Bears, 39-16.

Reape, Morgan, and Langen each posted two goals for the Bears, with Crowley adding a goal and a career-high three assists. Becca Lewis caused three turnovers to hit that mark for the fourth straight game, and Alexa Machado had 12 saves – half of them on free-position attempts.

Ursinus stays home to take on Wooster next Tuesday.
