Balanced Effort Helps Women's Lacrosse Surge Past Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team wasted little time putting a lopsided loss at fourth-ranked TCNJ behind it, getting strong play between the pipes and contributions up and down the roster to run away with a 14-4 non-conference victory at Widener on Wednesday night.

Less than 24 hours removed from an 11-1 setback at the hands of the Lions, Ursinus (4-3) conceded the game's opening goal but responded with a run of seven unanswered markers to leave the Pride behind and snap a two-game skid. Rookies Abby Goldstein and Emily DiGiorgio and senior Devin Brakel each scored twice during the spurt, which set Ursinus on the path to its fourth consecutive triumph over Widener (3-3). Junior Lindsey Grabell joined that group with a two-goal effort.

Despite the rout, the Bears' advantage in shots was slim (24-19). But Ursinus was ruthlessly efficient, getting multiple goals from four players and at least one from ten different student-athletes in improving to 3-1 on the road this season.

All three goalies made at least three saves for the Bears, who surrendered their fewest goals in a single game since a 14-0 shutout of Bryn Mawr two years ago. Senior Margaret Philbin played the entire first half and finished with three stops, while sophomore Meaghan Corbin registered five and allowed only one goal in 20:51 of second-half action. Freshman Kaitlyn France came on for the final nine minutes and change.

Goldstein pulled the Bears even just over five minutes into the contest, and freshman Courtney Cortese and DiGiorgio tallied just 28 seconds apart only two minutes later to ignite the visitors' game-breaking spurt.

DiGiorgio, Brakel, and Goldstein found the back of the net in a span of three minutes about midway through the half, and Grabell's free position conversion with 35 seconds left in the period put the Bears ahead, 8-2, at intermission.

Sophomore Taylor DeBernardi and Grabell potted goals less than a minute apart to kick-start the second-half scoring, and Ursinus was never threatened. Freshman Kaitlyn France entered in goal for the final nine minutes and change and made three saves to keep the Pride at bay.

Meghan Garvey led Widener with two goals, and Melissa Sailey collected five draw controls in addition to a goal.

Freshmen Kaci McNeave and Bridget Sherry, sophomore Jules Krasutsky, and junior Amy Kohout also connected for the Bears, while seniors Brynn Dietzel and Jessica Hill dished out their first assists of the season; Hill's was the second of her career.

Junior Lisa Grous had two ground balls and two draw controls and caused a turnover for Ursinus, which forced 15 turnovers and five failed clears, two of which led to goals on the other end.

The Bears open Centennial Conference play on Saturday, March 26 with a home game against Swarthmore.
