Women's Hoops Comeback Falls Short on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - The Ursinus College Women's Basketball was dealt a 47-38 setback to Washington College on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference play at Helfferich Hall.  

Prior to today's contest, the Bears honored its lone graduating senior Gabby Downs as part of senior day ceremonies. First-year forward Chinwe Irondi paced the Bears offense on the afternoon with 8th career double-double tallying 13 points and 14 rebounds. Alison Lisanti registered nine points, shooting three of five from behind the three-point line.  

In the first quarter, both teams struggled throughout the first few minutes until an Irondi layup but the Bears ahead 5-2 at the 3:51 mark. On the following possession, Lisanti drilled a three pointer to increase the Bears lead to five points. After an offense rebound from Irondi, a layup off the glass made the score 10-2 with 2:30 remaining in the first. Washington College went on a 7-2 run to close the first quarter, as the Bears led 12-9 at the break.  

The Shorewomen would start the second quarter on a 4-0 run to grab their first lead of the contest at the 6:27 mark. Both defenses stepped up as each team went scoreless over the next three minutes before Joy Sanders connected on a jump shot at the 3:02 mark. Irondi followed with draining two free throws from the charity stripe to make it a one-point game. Washington College would close out the quarter on a 4-2 run and led 19-16 at halftime.  

In the third quarter, Serena Pluta scored the first four points of the second half for the Shorewomen, before Natalie Mehl answered for the Bears with a three-pointer at the 8:10 mark. After a layup from Washington College, Downs connected on a three to make the score 25-22 with 6:35 remaining in the third. The Shorewomen responded with an 8-0 run over the next five minutes and stretched their lead to 11 at the 1:22 mark. Irondi closed out the third quarter making two free throws to make the score 33-24 with 10 minutes to play.  

Washington College opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run to stretch the score to 38-24 Shorewomen at the 7:42 mark. On the Bears following possession, Kelly Grant connected from deep to cut the deficit to 11 with 7 minutes to play. With 2:16 to play, Irondi connected on a jump shot, followed by a Lisanti three-pointer cut the Bears deficit to seven with 1:34 remaining in the fourth. Irondi connected on a layup and a free throw to make the score 42-38 with 45 seconds to play. Washington College would finish the game 5 of 6 from the free throw line, and the Bears offense couldn't complete the comeback. 

The Shorewomen held the advantage in Field Goal percentage, shooting 28.1% (16-57) from the field compared to 22.6% (12-53) for the Bears. Both defenses forced 14 turnovers a piece and the Bears outshot Washington College from deep shotting 24.1% compared to 13.3%. 

The Bears will return to action on Monday as they travel to Bryn Mawr for a 7pm tip off.
