Women's Basketball Falls to Haverford

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - The Ursinus College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start on Thursday, falling to Haverford at home, 61-39. The Bears were outscored 20-5 in the second quarter before locking down defensively in the second half, but the deficit proved to be too much.

The Bears offense struggled in the first half only shooting 20% from the field to Haverford's 49.7%. Alyssa Martin was Ursinus' leading scorer with 12 points, while Kelly Grant finished with 10 points and three assists. Chinwe Irondi scored six points and tallied 11 rebounds.

The Fords (5-3, 2-2) started off the first quarter jumping out to an early 8-2 lead, before Ursinus scored 4 straight points to make it 8-6 at the break.  Haverford's offense came alive in the second, scoring 10 straight points lead by Ally Landau who scored six of her 16 points during that run. Haverford led 28-8 before Sarah DiLello layup made it an 18-point deficit.

Irondi scored four straight points to start the second half for the Bears, but a layup from Landau and Kayla Robinson made the score 36-17. Martin made a three-pointer and then a layup for Ursinus before the Fords answered back with two jump shots from Kayla Robinson. Martin made two free throws at the end of the third quarter to make the score 45-27 Fords.

The Bears put up a fight in the final stanza, but Haverford continued to find the net and forced tough shots on the defensive end to defeat Ursinus 61-39. The Fords held the advantage in rebounds 37-28 and shot 53% from the field in the contest.

The Bears will finish their homestand with a Centennial Conference matchup against McDaniel on Saturday, starting at 3PM.
