Women's Basketball Hangs on to Defeat Swarthmore

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's basketball team held on to defeat Swarthmore on Wednesday night, 68-57. Lydia Konstanzer (26) and Aliyah Stephens (25) combined for 51 of the team's points in the win.

Konsanzer and Stephens put the Bears (4-3, 3-1) on the board early with back-to-back made shots. Tied at eight in the opening frame, Ursinus cashed in at the line on several free throws to go on a 7-1 run to close out the quarter, 15-9.

While the Bears looked to pull away, the Garnet would not go quietly. Consecutive threes from Swarthmore cut the deficit to two before Konstanzer converted on an old-fashioned "and-one" to put the Bears up, 20-15. Marisa Morano found netting from beyond the arc to give Ursinus its biggest lead of the half and then it was Stephens who put Ursinus up by double-digits. Again, however, it was the Garnet who climbed back with a 6-2 run in the final 1:30 of the half as the Bears lead 37-30.

Swarthmore kept that late momentum in the first half going into the second. The Garnet made back-to-back layups to open the half and trailed by just five. From there, it was all Ursinus. The Bears locked down defensively, allowing just one basket in the final 9:00 of the third quarter. The defensive run also included a scoreless 6:05 to close out the frame.

With the defense dialed in, the offense took advantage. A Stephens three-point play started a 15-0 run in the final six minutes. A Konstanzer lay-in put Ursinus back up by double-digits and then a pair of free throws by Stephens to close out the quarter gave the Bears a commanding 20-point lead at 56-36 heading into the final frame.

The Garnet finally scored 31 seconds into the fourth quarter, ending a 6:36 scoreless run. Swarthmore kept it going, cutting the deficit back to single-digits with a little over a minute to play. However, a Stephens layup followed by a Swarthmore missed three sealed the game for the Bears as they held on to win their second straight Centennial Conference game.

Stephens was all over the floor as she tied her career-high of 25 points on Wednesday. She previously set that mark last season against Dickinson. The junior matched her offensive production on the boards as defensively as she pulled in 12 rebounds – 10 of which came on the offensive end – and three steals to go with four blocks.

Konstanzer put up more than 25 points for the first time this season with her 26 on the night. The senior also tallied seven rebounds with three steals.
