Women's Basketball Cruises Past Garnet

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — The Ursinus College women's basketball team easily cruised by Swarthmore, 73-51, on Alumni Day at Helfferich Hall.

All 11 healthy Ursinus players got their name into the scoring column in the Bears' eight straight win over the Garnet. The Bears (11-5, 8-3), sitting in third place in the CC, proved to be too much for the struggling Garnet as the hosts' stingy defense limited Swarthmore (2-14, 1-10) to 26.5 percent from the field and 3-of-21 (14.3%) from the 3-point line. Ursinus shot much better at 45.9 percent for the game.

The Bears continued to exert their dominance on the interior as they more than doubled the Garnet's output in the paint (38 to 18).

Ursinus held the Garnet to just 20 points on 7-of-35 shooting (20%). Only five Swarthmore points came in the third quarter, on two made field goals across 16 shots.

Four Bears reached double-digit scoring performances despite limited minutes as the reserves came on in the second half. Junior Lydia Konstanzer scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half to push her double-digit scoring streak to eight points. Konstanzer added 11 rebounds in 22 minutes of action for her ninth double-double of the season. The low post stalwart snared nine of her caroms in the first half.

Sophomore Maya Kornfeld added 12 points for Ursinus, and classmate Marisa Morano made all five of her shots from the floor for 10 points. Freshman Gabby Downs scored all of her 10 points in the first half, including two 3-pointers.

Elizabeth Stiles had a game-high 22 points to lead the Garnet. Fourteen of Stiles' points came in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting. Stiles was the only Swarthmore player to make more than two field goals and reach double figures in the contest.

The Bears led by 10 points (22-12) after one quarter of play, then expanded the lead to 47-31 at halftime. Ursinus shot a red-hot 19-of-32 (59.4%) from the field in the first half.

A few seconds into the first quarter, Konstanzer finished a feed from Stephens. The Garnet matched on the other end with a layup of their own. But after the Garnet bucket, Ursinus held the visitors without a point until halfway through the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Morano's layup in the closing minutes put the Bears up by 19 points at 43-24.

Freshman reserve Maddy Sorokanych got into the fun with a nifty and-one with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter. Sorokanych's three-point play pushed the Bears' lead to 58-36.

Kornfeld dribbled in and found Sorokanych for a buzzer-beating finish near the basket at the end of the third quarter to expand the Bears' largest lead to 25 points, 61-36.

Ursinus hosts Bryn Mawr Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Bears have an unbeaten 53-0 record all-time against the Owls.
