Downs Dubbed Player of the Week

LANCASTER, Pa. – Two days after setting a new school record, Ursinus College women's basketball freshman Gabby Downs slapped a Centennial Conference player of the week stamp on a remarkable introduction to collegiate hoops.

Downs' honor comes on the heels of a historic performance in the Bears' 80-28 season-opening rout of Alvernia. The rookie canned eight 3-pointers to break the program benchmark for treys in a single game, ultimately outscoring the Golden Wolves by herself with 31 points. Downs needed only 16 shots to do so, connecting on two-thirds of her 12 three-point attempts and going 10-of-16 overall from the field.

Downs introduced herself to the Helfferich Hall faithful with a 3-pointer less than three minutes into the contest and never cooled off, making three triples in each of the first two quarters and tacking on two more in the third before sitting out the final ten minutes with the game well in hand. She sunk all three of her free throws, including one to cap a four-point play, and added a steal and a block to her stat line.

The women's basketball team is next in action on Friday against Vassar in the opening round of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Marymount (Va.).
