WESTMINSTER, Md. – A dismal first quarter sidetracked the Ursinus College women's basketball team Saturday at McDaniel, and despite the Bears' repeated efforts the early hole was too big to overcome in a 42-34 Centennial Conference setback.

Freshman Lydia Konstanzer led the way with eight points and five rebounds for an Ursinus squad that shot 25.6 percent (10 for 39), committed 17 turnovers, and failed to place a player in double figures. Jasmine Smith had a game-high 14 points and Karli Zeps supplied 10 as McDaniel (8-8, 6-5) completed the season sweep and gained a leg up in the conference playoff chase.

Ursinus missed 12 of its first 13 from the field, allowing the Green Terror to jump out to a 14-3 lead after one quarter of play. A bucket by Konstanzer brought an early 2-2 tie, but Smith scored the next five points and McDaniel led the rest of the way.

The deficit grew as large as 16 twice in the first half, the last on a lay-in by Smith that made it 24-8 at the 3:34 mark of the second. Senior Carla Maccaroni answered with her third 3-pointer of the season and senior Libby Lannon scored to get the Bears within 24-13 at intermission despite shooting just 20 percent (4 for 20).

The Bears were still behind by 15 with 3:34 left in the third before making a push. Two free throws from sophomore Brielle Clarke, a trey by sophomore Kaci McNeave, and a free throw by freshman Toni Suler got Ursinus to 35-27, but Sarah Bach's bucket moved the lead back to double digits after three periods.

Although it held McDaniel to only five points in the fourth quarter, Ursinus managed just seven of its own, only cutting the margin to single digits on Konstanze's buzzer-beating lay-up.

In spite of a 35-27 rebounding deficiency, the Green Terror owned the paint to the tune of a 22-6 advantage and scored eight points off turnovers. McDaniel shot 34.1 percent for the afternoon (15 for 44). Zeps finished with six rebounds and Alyssa March posted seven points and seven boards.

Suler led the Bears with six rebounds and two blocks. Lannon and freshman Paulina Boyer matched stat lines with five points and five boards. Konstanzer made four of her seven attempts from the field.

The women's basketball team welcomes Muhlenberg to Helfferich Hall for a CC contest on Tuesday, January 24.
