Women's Basketball Bested By River Hawks in Florida Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Ursinus College women's basketball team nearly stormed back from behind versus Susquehanna in its second game at the Land of Magic Classic on Thursday. The Bears came within one point in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell 71-64 in their final game of 2016.

Freshman Lydia Konstanzer again led the way on offense for the Bears (5-6) with a 20-point game. Fellow freshman Toni Suler recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and adding 10 boards and four blocks in an all-around effort.

Senior Libby Lannon and sophomore Brielle Clarke also hit double figures for Ursinus, as Lannon matched Suler's 11 and Clarke registered her second 10-point game of the season.

The Bears managed just six points in the second quarter, but Ursinus roared out of the half to put up 23 in the third, cutting the Susquehanna lead to 50-47. Later in the fourth, Konstanzer drove for a layup and one to make it a one-point game at 56-55 with 3:58 to play, but the Bears were unable to completely erase their defecit and the River Hawks pulled away late for the victory. A 3-pointer by Courtney Adams  with 1:07 remaining served as the dagger.

Nikki Komara led all scorers with 21 points for the River Hawks (10-1), who have won seven games in a row. Janine Conway finished with 14 points and Bailey Trell put up 12. Susquehanna went 25 of 51 (49.0 percent) from the field and a perfect 16 for 16 at the free-throw line, also connecting on five of nine 3-point attempts.

Konstanzer finished 8 of 17 from the floor and made all four of her foul shots in her sixth straight double-digit scoring effort. She added six rebounds, a pair of steals, and an assist. Clarke made both of her shots from beyond the arc in a 4-for-6 overal shooting effort, hitting double figures for the second time in three contests.

The Bears shot a season-high 40.0 percent (26 of 65) for the night and committed only ten turnovers, their second-lowest total of the year.

Ursinus returns to the court when it hosts Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference play on Saturday, January 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
