HAVERFORD, Pa. – Trailing by 15 just after halftime, the Ursinus College women's basketball team battled Haverford and got to within three points late in the second half, before the Fords (9-1 Centennial, 11-6) squeezed out a five-point win over the Bears (5-7 Centennial, 6-12) 61-56 on Tuesday evening.
Ursinus got 15 points and 12 rebounds from junior forward Jessica Porada, and ten points off the bench from sophomore guard Olivia Kane. Freshman guard Rachel Guy had nine points, with sophomore guard Gianna Pownall having eight.
Haverford was led by Jacquelyne Pizzuto with 22 points, with Elizabeth Lynch scoring 11.
Down 41-26 with 19:34 left in the game, Ursinus went on a 7-2 run over a span of 5:54 to get to within ten at 43-33 with 13:42 to go.
Haverford was able to keep the lead, but, Ursinus got one last push with a 6-0 run over a span of 1:33, getting to within three on a jumper by Kane with 1:52 to make the score 52-49.
Following a jumper by Smith with 1:26 left that put Haverford back up five, the Fords went up by as much as eight.
With five seconds left, a pair of foul shots by Guy got Ursinus within three at 59-56, but, Pizzuto countered with two of her town with four seconds left for the final scoring margin.
Ursinus took very good care of the ball, only making six turnovers.
The Bears host Bryn Mawr on Thursday.
