WBB takes win at the wire over F&M, 59-58

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The win streak for the Ursinus College women's basketball team has reached four as the Bears (10-11, 7-8 Centennial) defeated Franklin & Marshall (3-19, 1-14 Centennial) 59-58 in a nailbiter at Helfferich Hall Wednesday night.

Needing every possible win to have a chance at the Centennial playoffs, Ursinus got 19 points from sophomore forward Jessica Porada and 12 points from sophomore guard Alyssa Polimeni in the win. With three conference games remaining, the Bears are two back of Gettysburg and Muhlenberg for the fifth and final spot.

Senior guard Diamond Lewis added in ten points as well for the Bears.

F&M, who shot 48 percent from the field in the game, got 14 points from forward Kristina McCarthy and forward Emma Lisle.

The lead changed 19 times in the contest, with eight ties to go along with those changes. Ursinus trailed by seven in the latter part of the second half, down 52-45 with 6:44 left. Polimeni helped start the comeback, as she sank three straight foul shots after being fouled on a three-point shot.

Lewis drove down the middle for a layup with 5:55 left to cut the deficit to two at 52-50. Two more foul shots from Polimeni at 5:26 tied the score at 52-all. Porada's layup with 4:29 left gave Ursinus the lead for good at 54-52.

F&M got back within out at 59-58 with 14 seconds left as Lisle made two foul shots. But, the Diplomats had two tries at the basket but could not get a shot to fall.

Ursinus hosts Washington on Saturday, as the Bears will honor Lewis and senior forward Devin Butchko before the contest.
