Women's Basketball gets 70-64 win over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Paced by four players scoring in double figures, the Ursinus College women's basketball team navigated a tough three-game Centennial schedule to start the season, in a 70-64 win over Swarthmore Tuesday night at Tarble Pavilion.

Ursinus (3-2, 2-1 Centennial) held the Garnet (2-3, 0-3 Centennial) to just 28.1 percent shooting in the first half and led by as much as 18 points before holding off a late Swarthmore charge.

Sophomore guard Alyssa Polimeni had a team-high 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting, with senior guard Diamond Lewis scoring 13 points and handing out six assists.

Freshman forward Libby Lannon had 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting with sophomore forward Caroline Shimrock netting 11.

After allowing the opening basket, Ursinus went on a 14-2 run over the first 5:34 of the half to go up 14-4 on a foul shot by senior forward Devin Butchko.

Ursinus went up by as much as 12 in the first half, before settling for a seven-point intermission edge at 36-29.

After Swarthmore cut it to six (37-31), Ursinus went back up by 13 after Shimrock hit a three, and Polimeni and Lannon hit back-to-back baskets.

With the lead at 18 (56-38) with 12:11 to go, Swarthmore got as close as four at 67-63 in what turned out to be a foul shooting competition in the final 3:14.

Swarthmore was led by Elle Larsen who had 23 points and 15 rebounds, both game-highs. Swarthmore had a 46-32 edge in rebounding, with sophomore forward Jess Porada grabbing six for the Bears.

Ursinus takes off for Thanksgiving, before heading to F&M on Tuesday.
