WBB drops second game to Swarthmore, 57-53

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College Women's Basketball team (8-8, 5-6 Centennial) dropped the back end of a home-at-home series with a 57-53 home loss to league-leading Swarthmore College (14-2, 10-1 Centennial) on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears were lead by freshman forward Jess Porada (Morristown, N.J./Morris Catholic) who netted 13 points and grabbed eight boards on the afternoon.  Freshman guard Alyssa Polimeni (Berkely Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston Regional High School) had eleven points and seven boards as well.

Senior Amber Yacenda (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East), freshmen forward Tori Steinberg (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and freshman forward Caroline Shimrock (Landsdale, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) each contributed six points in the effort.

Swarthmore forward Elle Larson lead the way for the Garnet with 22 points and eleven rebounds.  Also netting a double-double on the afternoon was guard Katie Lytle, who netted twelve points and thirteen rebounds.  Also in double figures was guard Madeline Ross, who contributed 14 points in the effort.

While the Bears limited themselves to eleven turnovers and had six take-aways in the contest, the Garnet shot the ball nearly five percent better from the field and had five blocks on the afternoon.

Ursinus led early, grabbing a six-point lead with 16:12 to go on a foul shot by Yacenda. In a game that saw 17 lead changes, with most of them coming in the latter part of the first half, a layup by Porada tied the game at intermission at 29-all.

In the second half, Ursinus took a brief lead before Swarthmore took the lead for good at 34-32 with 17:37 left on a three-pointer by Ross. Swarthmore then went up by as much as 11 in the second half.

The Bears are back in action Wednesday as they host the Mules of Muhlenberg College.  Tip is set for 6pm.
