Women's Basketball slips by F&M, 48-45

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College got 13 points each from freshman forwards Caroline Shimrock (Lansdale, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) and Jessica Porada (Morristown, N.J./Morris Catholic) as the Bears (3-1, 1-0 Centennial) defeated Franklin & Marshall (3-1, 1-1 Centennial) 48-45 Tuesday night in women's basketball play.

Ursinus won its Centennial opener and won its third straight game.

Shimrock and Porada also posted a double-double as the two each grabbed ten rebounds in the win.

Junior guard Diamond Lewis (East Windsor, N.J./Stuart Country Day) scored eight, along with freshman guard Alyssa Polimeni (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston Regional).

F&M was led by senior guard Alexa Barbush who scored a game-high 27 points on 12-for-21 shooting. Senior guard Elizabeth Snyder added in eight.

With the game tied at 21-all after one half of play, Ursinus opened the half on a 20-7 run to go up 13 at 41-28 on a jumper by Polimeni with 6:32 left. From there, the Diplomats slowly fought back, getting all the way to within two at 45-43 with 23 seconds left on a three-pointer by Snyder.

A pair of foul shots by Lewis with 21 seconds left put Ursinus back up four at 47-43.

On the Diplomats next possession, a shot by junior guard Sam Plunkett did not fall and Porada grabbed her tenth rebound on the night. After sinking the back end of two foul shots, she gave Ursinus a 48-43 lead.

Ursinus led by as much as seven in the first half, before F&M took its largest lead of the game at 17-14 with 5:27 left in the first on a jumper by Plunkett.

Neither team shot the ball well, as Ursinus made just 32.7 percent of its shots, compared to 33.3 percent from F&M. The Diplomats connected on just 2-of-14 three-pointers on the night (14.3 percent), while Ursinus made 3-of-8 attempts (37.5 percent).

Ursinus hosts Bryn Mawr on Thursday.
